“We got nothing”

Without safety equipment or fair wages, Delhi’s crematorium workers struggle to make ends meet

“We put our lives in danger and fought with death on the frontlines," Govinda, a crematorium worker at the Old Seemapuri grounds, said. "Isn't this smoke terrible? We have to breathe it. We sweat in the heat. The same hands we cremate with, we have to wash and eat with. We are fighting so many diseases at once. Nobody asks about us now.”
