Kafeel Khan, a paediatrician, talks about the families affected by the August 2017 Gorakhpur hospital tragedy where 63 children and 18 adults died due to a shortage of oxygen. The oxygen provider had allegedly cut off supply because of delayed payments by the administration. Khan, at Baba Raghav Das Medical College in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh, made several desperate efforts to save children, even paying for oxygen cylinders himself. However, the UP administration accused him of medical negligence and of illegally having a private medical practice while working at a government hospital. Khan, who had to serve time in prison, says he was made a scapegoat to cover for the people responsible for the oxygen shortage at BRD Hospital. He spoke to The Caravan about the larger systemic issues that led to the tragedy and why he has written a book about it.
