Sidhu’s success owed much to the skewed consciousness of Punjabi youth following decades of social and political conflict post Independence compounded by liberalisation in the 1990s. His songs are full of Jutt supremacy, machismo, guns, wealth and arrogance. He took his place as a messiah of an ahistorical, desensitised youth. In the August issue of The Caravan, Singh wrote a cover story on Moose Wala. “In a sense, Punjab was always primed for such a hero to arrive,” he wrote.
