Has Bollywood taken the audience for granted? 

In the latest episode of The Caravan Baatcheet, award-winning journalist and film critic Anna MM Vetticad talks about Bollywood’s failure to take risks, boycott culture, and why South Indian cinema is winning over Hindi cinema.

Vetticad argues that the COVID-19 lockdown allowed Hindi-cinema viewers to discover Tamil, Telegu and Malayalam cinema, all of which are experimenting with fresh treatments and stories. Bollywood has been able to take its audiences for granted, Vetticad says. It is fearful of failure and therefore easy to bully.

कारवां बातचीत के नए एपिसोड में अवॉर्ड विनिंग पत्रकार और फिल्म आलोचक ऐना एम एम वेट्टिकाड ने बॉलीवुड, हिंदी सिनेमा और बायकॉट कल्चर पर बातचीत की. उन्होंने बताया कि क्यों हिंदी फिल्में बॉक्स ऑफिस पर नहीं चल रही हैं और ऐसा क्यों है कि दक्षिण भारतीय फिल्में हिंदी बेल्ट में भी अच्छा प्रदर्शन कर रही हैं.

ऐना का कहना है कि लॉकडाउन के दौरान भारतीय दर्शक, जो आमतौर पर केवल बॉलीवुड सिनेमा देखते थे, नेटफ्लिक्स और अमेजन प्राइम जैसे स्ट्रीमिंग प्लेटफॉर्म पर अन्य भाषाओं और क्षेत्रों की फिल्मों के बारे में जान पाए जिससे दर्शकों ने महसूस किया कि हिंदी फिल्म उद्योग अभी भी लकीर का फकीर बना हुआ है जबकि मलयालम, तमिल और तेलुगु सिनेमा में बहुत से नए प्रयोग हो रहे हैं.
