In this episode of The Caravan Baatcheet, host Vishnu Sharma talks to author and journalist Vaibhav Vats about the controversy surrounding namaz in Gurugram, and the changing forms of Hindu majoritarian communalism. Vats has done a longform report on the Gurugram namaz controversy in the February 2023 issue of The Caravan.
There were no mosques in Gurugram, one of the largest and wealthiest among India’s new-fangled cities. The Haryana Urban Development Authority would allocate land for religious sites, but mosques were allocated land only once. In an informal arrangement, the local administration allocated open spaces for namaz. Since 2018, the number of sites where namaz can be performed in the city have dwindled from 100 to six. As of December 2022, namaz at these six sites has also been disrupted. Sharma speaks to Vats about how Gurugram’s Hindu Right orchestrated the namaz row and how the controversy signals a change in Hindu majoritarian communalism.

आज भारत और दुनिया भर में ऑल्ट राइट का उभार हो रहा है. वत्य के अनुसार, “जो लोकल ecosystem में अथवा establishment में अपनी जहग नहीं बना पाते हैं वो establishment से भी ज्यादा रेडिकल हो कर अपनी जगह बनाने की कोशिश कर रहे हैं.”
वत्स का कहना है कि साल 2000 से पहले “सांप्रदायिक दंगों में नाम आने के बाद नेता इस्तीफा दे देते थे लेकिन गुजरात में जब मोदी ने ऐसा नहीं किया और बाद में वह प्रधानमंत्री भी बन गए तो लोगों को लगता है कि यह राजनीति में आगे बढ़ने का जरिया है.” वत्स मानते हैं कि समाज में "नरसंकार का विचार" गहरे तक पैठ बना चुका है.
