The play is a dramatic reinterpretation of the story of Zoon, a nickname for the sixteenth-century Kashmiri poet Habba Khatoon. According to legend, she was a peasant who married Yusuf Shah Chak, who would go on to rule Kashmir. The couple tragically fell afoul of the Mughal emperor Akbar, who coveted Khatoon.
