PIRAMAL MUSEUM OF ART, MUMBAI
24 JUNE TO 20 OCTOBER
One of the most significant artists to define Indian modernism and a founding member of the Bombay Progressives, SH Raza blended together post-war American abstract expressionism and classical French techniques he learnt at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris. This exhibition, the first since his death in 2016, is curated by Vaishnavi Ramanathan and Ashvin E Rajagopalan. It traces Raza’s growth as an artist and philosopher by showcasing five decades of his work—from his early days in Mumbai and his travels around India and then France, to his metaphorical return to his Indian roots.
