Expelled from Nepal for being too liberal a ruler after only 144 days in power, Dev Shamsher Rana sought refuge across the border in India. “Nirvasanama” documents his short reign and his life with his seven children at the Fairlawn Castle in Mussorie during the first half of the twentieth century. Using an extensive repository of images from the archives of Bhuvan Kumari Devi, it recreates a life of glamour and intrigue, and explores the various photographic techniques used both in front of the camera and behind it.
