ALAPPUZHA, KERALA
11 AUGUST
First organised in 1952, the Nehru Trophy Boat Race on Punnamada Lake near Alappuzha attracts some two hundred thousand people from all over the world every year. Held on the second Saturday in August, the annual regatta comprises races in different categories, with teams ranging from 20 to 100 rowers per boat. The most prestigious race is that of the chundan vallams—snake boats—for which the Nehru Trophy is awarded. For the people of Kuttanad, victory for their village boat is something to be celebrated for months to come.
