In Light of Mexico

01 June, 2011

In an attempt to further strengthen ties between the two countries, the Embassy of Mexico in India and the Indian Council for Cultural Relations have organised a two-and-a-half-month-long exhibition on photography and poetry at Instituto Cervantes. The exhibition showcases 50 shortlisted photos by Manuel Alvarez Bravo, one of the stalwarts in photography, and 32 poems by Octavio Paz, one of the world’s foremost poets and essayists who also served as Mexico’s ambassador to India from 1962-68. Also on display is a set of 25 freshly rediscovered photos of Paz in India from private and public archives.

The selected works of Alvarez Bravo belong to the MAB Foundation, directed by Aurelia Alvarez Bravo and Collette Urbajtel, the daughter and widow of Alvarez Bravo’s. Paz’s poems are taken from his book, Instant and Revelation, a collection of “poems that expressed the elusive and meaningful nature of the instant”.
