Living Traditions is an ongoing series showcasing the folk music traditions of different regions of India. This year the focus is on Goa. A Portuguese colony for more than 450 years, Goa has an interesting mix of Indo-Portuguese traditions, the influences of which are evident in its artistic, architectural and musical heritage. It was the Portuguese who introduced the use of the violin, piano and mandolin in Goan music. To celebrate Goan music, the twoday festival features an evening of Fado, a performance of vocals, Portuguese guitar and classical guitar; and an evening of traditional songs from Goa, a performance of vocals, guitar, mandolin and dance.
