The utsav that was to be held in early November almost got shelved because of the recent political turmoil and floods in north Karnataka. But to everyone’s relief, it was finally scheduled for the last week of January. The Karnataka government has planned grand celebrations for this year as 2010 marks the 500th anniversary of the coronation of Vijayanagar king, Krishnadevaraya. That means more performances (dance, music, drama), folk arts, exhibitions, processions and a carnival among the famous rocks and ruins. It’s to be a crowded affair, with packed buses and trains and overbooked accommodation, so plan ahead.

The cultural programmes for Hampi Utsav will be held from 27-29 January. For more information, visit http://www.karnataka.com/tourism/hampi/hampi-festival.html
