Farmers’ unions had called for a nationwide “Delhi Chalo” protest on 26 November, to protest controversial farm laws recently enacted by the Narendra Modi government. The Haryana government, also under BJP rule, sealed all state borders with Punjab and Delhi to prevent farmers from reaching the national capital. Thousands of protestors descended upon the barricades and forced their way through towards the capital. On 27 November, the Delhi Police granted the protestors permission to assemble in Burari, in north-east Delhi.
