Narrative Journalism Bootcamp 2020

Overview:

Asia has a long history of news journalism. The potential for narrative journalism, however, remains largely underexplored.

The KAS Media Programme Asia, in partnership with The Caravan—an established India-based narrative journalism magazine—is offering an intensive, hands-on fellowship on narrative reporting and writing, for a maximum of twelve journalists from South Asia. Between January and June 2020, the participants will get the chance to learn from and interact with a team of award-winning journalists from India and Germany.

With the help of our trainers, each participant will produce one unique piece of narrative journalism, be it a profile, an investigative report, or even a first-person essay on a topic of public interest. The organisers will help the participants pitch their pieces to well-known print media outlets—in Asia and beyond.

Only candidates who meet the following requirements are eligible:

To apply, write to the Director of the KAS Media Programme Asia, Mr. Christoph Grabitz, at [email protected], by midnight on 24 November 2019, with the subject line “Narrative Journalism Bootcamp 2020”.

Please attach to your application: a cover letter explaining your interest in the workshop and describing why you are the perfect fit. Remember that this is a workshop on storytelling—so keep it personal: Your expertise is indispensable, your ideas matter, your perspective is important and your voice is unique. Tell us why we should take your story idea to the reading public.

Please enclose your CV, two writing samples and two brief story ideas, of no more than 150 words each, outlining narrative stories that you would like to work on during the workshop, each in the English language.

Your topics and protagonists must be relevant, i.e. potentially appealing to the shared humanity of readers. Pitches on local topics are highly welcome. Please note that the organisers will not cover travel expenses for reporting the stories. Please select your topics accordingly.

Successful applicants will be informed in the first week of December, by KAS.

For questions regarding the application process, kindly reach out to the KAS research associate Mr. Christoph Koitka: [email protected]
