The Caravan occupies a singular position among Indian magazines. Its stories present a unique mix of detailed reportage and vivid writing, with a commitment to the art of storytelling, whether the subject is politics, culture, travel or art. Working with some of the finest reporters and writers in India and beyond, the magazine consistently produces exemplary reportage and essays, and has set new benchmarks for journalism in India and South Asia. The Caravan remains independent of government and corporate interests, and is sustained by subscription revenues rather than advertising sales, leaving the magazine accountable fully and only to its readers.

 

Job Description:

The Audience Development Manager will be responsible for systematically expanding The Caravan’s audience and subscriber base. They will be expected to:

 

o   Establish and lead a dedicated department for subscription management and growth, reporting to the magazine’s editorial leadership

o   Develop and execute strategies for outreach and subscription growth

o   Supervise campaigns and promotions, set and meet appropriate targets

o   Work closely with the editorial and design teams to create suitable messaging and communication materials for showcasing the magazine’s values and published work

o   Design tailored subscription campaigns to target readers based on geographic, cultures, professional and other demographic indicators

o   Build a database of existing subscribers and registered readers, and use surveys, Google Analytics, focus groups, etc. to build typological profiles of subscribers

o   Establish channels to interact with readers and subscribers, solve customer complaints and build strong relationships with them via email, telephone, WhatsApp, etc.

o   Supervise the magazine’s social-media feeds and newsletters, and continually grow user numbers and engagement across all platforms

o   Track and analyse engagement data across the website, newsletters, social-media feeds and search engines, and develop data-driven insights for improving reader engagement and experience

o   Work with in-house engineers as needed to develop new front-end features as well as back-end tools for measuring and improving reader engagement and experience

o   Pursue and recruit institutional subscribers in India and abroad (e.g. universities, embassies, think tanks, foundations, libraries, etc.)

o   Train editorial staff on best practices in SEO, social media posts, etc.

 

Candidates should have three to five years of experience spearheading outreach, promotion or sales campaigns, communications, user recruitment and/or business development in the fields of publishing, media, advertising, corporate houses and/or non-profit organisations. They should have excellent communication, organizational and leadership skills, as well as a proven record of self-sufficiency and taking the initiative. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a passion for the work and mission of The Caravan, and be highly-motivated to grow its readership and reach, as well as to expand the space for independent journalism in India. Established expertise in coding, design or data analysis will be considered a plus. Individuals from marginalized backgrounds are highly encouraged to apply.

 

The compensation package will be commensurate with past experience, and will include bonuses linked to meeting set subscription targets. The Caravan newsroom is a small shop, with the environment of a start-up, and requires team players with a willingness to be flexible. This is a full-time position.
