Who knew that a worm could cause such damage? At a recent black-tie Kremlin dinner in honour of visiting German President Christian Wulff, the unexpected vermicule slid across the plate of Dmitry Zelenin, the governor of the Tver Oblast region, who took a photograph, posted it on Twitter and wrote, “It was a very special way to show the salad was fresh.” Very Shashi Tharoor—and a very bad move. It could yet signal the end of Zelenin’s career. Sergei Prikhodko, the Kremlin’s top foreign policy advisor, asked for a law making governors vulnerable to ‘termination for imbecility.’ The Kremlin’s head chef, Anatoly Galkin, huffed that Zelenin’s “allegation” was “nonsense.” But there’s the photograph floating around in cyberspace: the worm of denial will eventually turn.
