Every autumn, local organisations in Germany distribute goody bags among apprehensive children attending their first day at school. It’s usually all chocolates, pencils and erasers—except that this year, a bunch of bemused six-year-olds in Essen, in northwest Germany, received from the German Communist Party pens that project erotic images when pointed at a wall. Left red in the face, the party claimed that it had purchased the pens from a discount shop in the belief that the pens were flashlights that would light up when clicked. The party then went and compounded its conspicuous consumption error by claiming that “it was outraged that this kind of thing, which borders on pornography, can be purchased in normal shops”. Wonder how they’re going to show this in their audit books.
