The journalist Joe Sacco’s The Once and Future Riot pieces together accounts of the 2013 Muzaffarnagar riots, which left 62 dead, and over fifty thousand displaced, the majority of whom were Muslim. In this excerpt from the book, published with permission from LeftWord Books, Sacco speaks to survivors of the violence, including those from the Muzaffarnagar and Shamli districts who were living in the displacement camps he visited. Muslim villagers recount the riot’s long-lasting after-effects, their efforts to get compensation, and the fear of returning to their villages.
