The Law of Force
The Violent Heart of Indian Politics
Thomas Blom Hansen
This book begins with three scenes of violence: a conversation with an RSS worker in Pune in 1989; a close look at the destruction wreaked on a Muslim neighbourhood in Bombay in 1993 by Shiv Sena supporters; and a 2018 visit to those affected by the Bhima Koregaon violence in a Dalit neighbourhood in Aurangabad. It uses reportage and historical sources to understand how widely accepted the use of violence has become in public life.
