Several political regimes and political leaders across the globe, empowered by popular anti-liberal attitudes, have turned against liberalism. Mukherjee considers the origins of this philosophy and demonstrates that it flourished when Western empires dominated much of the world, although liberal freedoms were denied to colonised peoples. He argues that various contradictions intrinsic to liberalism have made it vulnerable to attack and left it in crisis.
