The author’s most recent novel is a reinterpretation of the Silappadikaram, the first known Tamil epic poem, about a woman who has to battle against injustice, and unleashes her wrath to bring down an entire city. Arni, who has written extensively on Indian epics before—including retellings of the Mahabharata and the Ramayana—adds a twist to the narrative by including the story of Ilango Adigal, the individual who is credited as the composer of the Silappadikaram.
