BR Ambedkar
with an introduction by Kancha Ilaiah
In Riddles in Hinduism, BR Ambedkar poses numerous questions about Hinduism: Is it even a religion? Who is a Hindu? The book was not published during Ambedkar’s lifetime, and when it was finally printed in Maharashtra in 1987, the Shiv Sena tried to ban it. Today, as the state and the Hindu right paint Ambedkar as a Hindu figure, the stringent critique he put forth in this book—now presented with annotations—reminds us where he stood on Hinduism. In the introduction, the writer Kancha Ilaiah explains why Hinduism is facing its largest challenge ever, from Dalit-Bahujans.
