Kamaladevi Chattopadhyay was a towering figure in the political and cultural life of post-colonial India. Aside from serving as an ambassador to several African and Asian countries, she was also active in anti-colonial, socialist and feminist movements across the globe. In India, she is credited with reviving thousands of craft traditions, and promoting national institutions for dance, theatre, music and art. This collection, which includes essays by Chattopadhyay as well as articles by leading contemporary scholars on her work, is the first book-length study of her wide-ranging life.
