Coming Out as Dalit: A Memoir

01 March 2019

Yashica Dutt

The journalist Yashica Dutt’s memoir is both a personal account of coming to terms with her identity as a Dalit and a commentary on the ways that caste discrimination operates in India. It looks back at the ways that her decision to hide her caste from friends and colleagues for several years affected her, and what shifted when she decided to reveal her identity. It also explores the trajectory of Dalit movements around the country, and comments on issues such as reservation, a lack of access to education and the paucity of Dalit voices in the media.
