Attack on The Caravan's journalists

Arundhati Roy, Prashant Bhushan, Anand Sahay address meeting at Press Club of India

14 August, 2020

On 11 August 2020, a mob assaulted three journalists working with The Caravan—Shahid Tantray, Prabhjit Singh and a woman journalist—in Subhash Mohalla, in northeast Delhi’s North Ghonda neighbourhood. The mob targeted Tantray for his Muslim identity, beating him and using communal slurs. During her attempt to get away from the attack, the woman journalist faced sexual harassment from a middle-aged man who exposed himself to her. Later, the mob attacked her as well.

Two days later, on 13 August, the Press Club of India hosted a meeting regarding the attack. The author and activist Arundhati Roy, the advocate Prashant Bhushan, the Press Club of India’s president Anand Sahay and The Caravan’s political editor Hartosh Singh Bal addressed the meeting. Prabhjit Singh and Tantray recounted their ordeal. The woman journalist wrote a statement, which was read out.

Though the journalists filed detailed complaints on the day of the attack, the Delhi Police is yet to register an FIR.
